Bits and Bites

When it comes to computers, do you minimize energy use? It's time to go back to school, so many Americans are replacing their computers. You can look for the Energy Star label to find one that uses less electricity. When you get your computer home, you can choose energy-saving settings like when to turn off the monitor. What ways do you and your family save energy with electrionics?

We turn off the computer, printer and monitor when not using it. I don't think we do a very good job in this area. We should be plugging in to power strips that we turn off, but we haven't done this. I think there is a fear that the dates and clocks of the electronics will be messed up. It's hard enough to figure out how to use the remotes to make the different pieces of equipment come on! I think I'm afraid of messing something up entirely! Also - don't have a good idea of how much extra electricity I'm using daily by having them plugged in.

Ther are some really neat devices available now that measure electrical energy use. I like the plug in kind and am interesting in buying one of these. The Kill-A-Watt item looks very good. It's only $24.99. I have also seen some gizmos that plug into an automobile to indicate mpg's. Hypermilers use these, obviously on vehicles that don't have one factory installed.
