We invited several local caterers to sponsor a theme. Not only was each vignette beautiful, but the caterers also learned and abided by our Green Policy. by The Sustainability Steward

On October 18th, I attended the Feeding the Need: Making It Visible Luncheon sponsored by the Seven Loaves Community of St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Plano. Because the Seven Loaves Community food pantry is a recipient of the produce from the Plano Community Garden, I wanted to attend to learn more about the plight of the homeless and hungry in Collin County.

The guest speaker was Texas Senator Florence Shapiro from District 8, the district that includes PCG, and she gave a very powerful speech about the growth of the homeless in our community. What makes this even more alarming is that the zip code of St. Andrew and the Plano Community Garden, 75093, is the third wealthiest zip code in the eastern half of the DFW Metroplex.

Senator Shapiro shared with us how the homeless population has increased over 200% in the past three years in Collin County, and that an unbelieveable 14% of the citizens now in our county are food insecure. In fact, 60% of the homeless interviewed are employed, though under-employed, and the availability of food has become the largest need now among those in poverty in our area. She ended her speech by sharing with us the Eight Levels of Charity as described by the great philosopher, Maimonides. Maimonides taught that by sharing one’s talents and gifts with others in order to strengthen them so they no longer are a burden on others, one is exhibiting the greatest level of charity. Senator Shapiro then applauded the Plano community for its charity and, more importantly, by “teaching others to fish”, providing a means to those around us to help pull themselves out of poverty and hunger.

The Plano Community Garden is one way to help alleviate hunger in our area. By adopting and agreeing to care for a plot in the PCG, one agrees to maintain a garden plot year round and provide half of one’s grown produce to the area food pantries in Plano, including the Seven Loaves pantry operated by St. Andrew United Methodist. All water, mulch and compost in the PCG is provided at no charge to the gardener by the city of Plano, and, more importantly, one receives the satisfaction of helping to alleviate hunger in the area. If interested in learning more about the garden and the opportunities that it offers, please log on to the URL below and find out more:

The rate at which the ice in the Arctic is melting has reached record levels this year, setting off numerous predictions, warnings and questions about the future. The ice that melted had an area the size of Canada and Alaska combined, causing the total Arctic ice expanse to dip below 1.4 million square miles, a drastic change from the 2.7 million square miles in 1972. This massive discrepancy is largely due to human activity and the burning of fossil fuels.

The shrinking ice mass has had several notable effects, including the reopening of the Northwest Passage. The use of this passage would be beneficiary to large companies, who would glean bigger savings from a shorter shipping route through the Arctic.

But without as much white ice reflecting the sun’s heat, temperatures will rise, causing an amount of global warming equivalent to twenty years of carbon dioxide emissions. The warming is also affecting the jet stream, in which greater fluctuations may cause more extreme climate conditions. Animals indigenous to the area, as well as native communities, are already being forced to adapt.

The retreating ice has also allowed more accessibility to the fossil fuel supply the Arctic holds. This opens the area up to major ecological damage in the case of leaks or explosions. Shell has already been granted permission to drill for oil in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas and is expected have a $10 billion profit. Shell has already experienced problems with its spill containment dome though, raising concerns that the risks outweigh the profits.

Coastal cities are at risk as well, as rising sea levels threaten to encroach on the land. Island nations such as Tuvalu are already considering evacuation plans.

Some have predicted the ice will have almost completely melted as soon as 2020. One report predicts that if the earth does not adjust to climate change, over one hundred million lives will be lost by 2030.

These dire forecasts have environmentalists and other experts in the field clamoring for reform and change in human behavior before it is too late. Any difference you can incorporate into your daily living to reduce your CO2 emission footprint will help, whether it is by consuming less red meat, opting for public transport, walking or biking, purchasing local produce, using alternative energy sources, or choosing any of the countless other options.

What changes will you make?Live Green in Planohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17794890916544613629noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-433540846248458901.post-56129992897254131602012-10-09T08:53:00.000-07:002012-10-09T08:53:56.789-07:002012 DFW Solar Home Tourby The Sustainability Steward
On Saturday, October 6, I toured some of the homes here in Plano on the annual DFW Solar Home Tour, sponsored by the American Solar Energy Society (ASES). This is the 17th year that ASES held a national solar tour, with 14 homes in the Metroplex listed on the self-guided tour. The City of Plano demonstrated its leadership in sustainability with four homes on the tour, the most of any one city the area.

by Kris

For those of us lucky enough to call Plano home, we want to make sure it will remain a place we are proud to call home. We can start by taking advantage of those curbside recycle bins that have been at the end of our driveways for over a decade. Go Plano!

The curbside program collects the following recyclable materials to be processed for shipment to recycling markets:

Newspapers, magazines, & catalogs

Phone books

Glass jars, containers, dishes, drink ware, & vases

Paper bags

Aerosol cans

Aluminum cans

Junk mail

cardboard

Plastic bottles and containers

Shredded paper

Chipboards/boxboards

So we have the bins and we know what to put in them, but WHY RECYCLE? Recycling:

Helps to sustain our environment for future generations

Conserves our natural resources and protects wildlife habitat and biodiversity

Decreases emissions of greenhouse gases that contribute to global climate change

Reduces toxic chemicals and toxic waste

Saves energy

Prevents water pollution

Reduces the need for landfills and incineration

Increases manufacturing jobs

Those are only 8 of many more reasons why we should recycle, but they’re some great reasons aren’t they? Other ways to promote recycling, other than collecting and processing, is to purchase items we know that can be recycled. It’s a continuous loop that reduces room for additional waste. Once you get the hang of it, it will become a habit and you will know that you’re doing everything you can to make Plano (and our earth!) a better place for future generations to come.

I like to set out a paper bag near the garage where I put all my recyclable items throughout the week. Than the day before trash days, I’ll bring it all out and place it in the recycle bin. It’s that easy! It barely requires any effort, but we’re making this city better. Lastly, don’t forget - your habits often reflect on family and friends, so be a leader and start setting these green examples today!

Keep living green,

by EcoDad

Chances are that someone in your life is affected by asthma. Asthma hits over 25 million people, so it is likely a friend, relative, or coworker, has been struggling to breathe in recent weeks. You probably have seen them using their steroidal inhalers more often while others, like my wife, were forced to start taking prescription drugs such as singulair or prednisone to help open their airways.

The reason for this is an increase in ozone air pollution. You’ve seen the local weatherman on the news briefly mention today’s air pollution watch, or driven passed the signs on the highway that read, “orange air quality day, please carpool”. This is due to high levels of ground level ozone. So, what is ground level ozone? It is a gas consisting of 3 atoms of oxygen instead of the normal 2. Ozone is not emitted directly into the atmosphere. Instead, it is formed when volatile organic compounds and nitric oxides react in direct sunlight. Emissions from power plants, industrial facilities, and gasoline vapors contribute to the formation of ground level ozone. However, the main source is from motor vehicle emissions.

Ozone pollution is a greater concern in the summer months due to the strong sunlight and high temperature, which are the ideal conditions for the chemical reactions that form ozone. Ozone is a regulated pollutant under the Clean Air Act. Unfortunately, most of North Texas is classified as a nonattainment area. This means that our area fails to meet EPA standards for ozone concentrations, so we already have a problem with this pollutant that is amplified during the hotter months. Healthy people can also be affected. If you spend a lot of times outdoors during bad air quality days, you may find yourself out of breath easier or getting tired quicker. Coughing, sore throat, and chest pains, are some of the acute health problems caused by breathing in ozone. Repeated exposure can even cause permanent scarring of lung tissue.

You may be thinking, “but I thought ozone was good”. You are correct. The EPA has a saying about ozone. Good up high. Bad nearby. Ozone in the stratosphere shields us from much of the sun’s harmful rays. However, in the troposphere, or ground level, it is a pollutant that has harmful effects on people and will even damage the trees, crops, and other foliage. There are many things that you can do to help your friends and family breathe easier. Keep abreast of the day’s air quality index. You can download the Air Now apps for your smart phone, or sign up for email alerts at: http://www.enviroflash.info/signup.cfm. Whenever you see a bad air quality alert, be cognizant of the choices you will make, so that everyone in North Texas can breathe easier.

Do not refuel your vehicle or lawn mower during bad ozone days. If you must, do so at night or early in the morning.

Do not use outdoor gas equipment such as lawn mowers or leaf blowers. You can drive to from Plano to Lake Texoma and back home and still produce less pollution than one hour of emissions from your gas mower.

Consider electronic mowers. Most residents of Collin County can receive a rebate for replacing their current gas mower with an electric....up to $150!!!

weeks ago the City of Dallas issued a state of emergency and began aerial
spraying to combat the West Nile Virus.
This decision landed Dallas on a good number of headlines across the US
and also raised debate amongst many concerned citizens and green
activists. It was a tough decision for
Dallas to make because aerial spraying for mosquitoes has the possibility of
saving lives by controlling the spread of the virus, but at the same time is harmful
to humans and our environment.

<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin;">This
brings us to the topic of pesticides. There are benefits to using pesticides,
mainly minimizing the number of insects and their effects; however, pesticides

with the wind and can easily contaminate other areas and increase tropospheric
ozone levels. These increased ozone
levels can often be seen by the human eye as smog and affects our lungs and
respiratory system. In addition, biodiversity
in the soil is affected by pesticide contamination and decreases the yield of
crops and water retention. Plants that

about being green by eating green? You
can easily do so by joining a Community Supported Agriculture Program (CSA)!
So what exactly is a
community supported agriculture program (CSA), you ask?

A CSA is an alternative, locally based socio-economic model
of agriculture and food distribution that brings together local farmers and
consumers. Basically, a nearby farm
offers their harvest to local consumers through a subscription that varies
according to the duration and quantity wanted.
Once you are subscribed, you will be getting boxes of the freshest
seasonal produce available!

CSA programs benefit
our environment in so many ways from reduction in environmental waste to promoting
healthier soil and land. CSA farmers
participate in eco-friendly farming by cutting out any use of pesticides on
their crops, which helps to limit pollution throughout our environment. In addition, carbon dioxide emissions are
reduced by the minimal transportation needed by these farmers to get their
produce from their farms to local consumers.
Their sustainable practices enhance the overall quality of our
environment while also reducing their carbon footprint.

Healthy soil means a healthier you. CSA programs benefit you because these farmers are pesticide, artificial
fertilizers, and toxin free. You have
the opportunity to consume some of the freshest produce available and for a
reasonable price. Most of the time
you’ll realize that you get higher quality and more produce for your money from
these CSA bins than when would had you purchased your produce from a grocery
store. CSA programs also give you the
freedom of choice. You get to choose
which farm you prefer to receive your produce from, which farmer you believe promotes
the best sustainability methods, and whether or not the program aligns with
your budget. Depending on the farm,
you’ll receive an array of produce and have the opportunity to experience
fruits and vegetables according to seasons. Sometimes you may see produce you’ve never
seen or heard of, but it allows you and your family to experience something
new. And who knows, it could turn out to
be your new favorite fruit or vegetable!

A farmer benefits
from a CSA program as this gives him or her a secure income year round,
allowing them to continually improve their farming methods and environmental
practices. They have a fair means of
product sales as they sell their produce straight to consumers with no middleman
required. This also gives them the chance
to be more involved in the community, meeting new people, consumers, and other
farmers.

If you’re interested in participating in a CSA, these are
some great places to start:

These sites allow you to search for CSA programs near you as
well as what their practices may be.
They each have their individual websites where you can learn more about
them and email/call them for more information about their programs and prices. Each farm has their own growing seasons, pick
up/drop off schedules, and agriculture practices.

Don’t forget that you have the ability to visit these farms
to see where it all begins and how it gets from farm to table. It’s a wonderful experience for families to
share with their children and a great way to get out of the house during these
long summer days.

So by joining a CSA, not only are you going green and
helping to make Plano greener, but you’re also saving money, improving your
health and wellness, and most importantly, improving your quality of life and
those around you.

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">In my continued effort to be more green, I've
been composting using the Bokashi method for almost two years now. Bokashi
is a Japanese term that means "fermented organic matter". It is a
method of intensive composting that normally uses an anaerobic (without air)
inoculation process to produce the compost. Once a starter culture is made, it
can be re-used. Bokashi is commonly made with only molasses, water,
microorganisms called "effective microorganisms" or "EM",
and wheat bran. It has traditionally been used to increase the microbial
diversity and activity in soils and to supply nutrients to plants.<span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">
<span style="color: black; font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">The Process<span style="mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">In home composting applications, kitchen waste
is placed into a container which is sealed with an air tight lid. These scraps
are then inoculated with a Bokashi EM mix. The user continues to place
alternating layers of food scraps and Bokashi EM until the container is full.
Once the bucket is full to capacity, the waste can be buried. Here's the REALLY
COOL part that separates it from traditional composting - you can put a
reasonable amount of dairy and meat products in it (yes, I said MEAT). The
liquid, known as Bokashi Juice, can be used as plant food, or can be poured
down the drain. This is good (I've heard) for households with septic systems.<span style="mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">The food waste does not break down or decompose
while it's in the bucket, however. Much of it will remain and it will have a
"pickled" smell. The breakdown of waste will occur after it has been
transferred to the soil. Burying Bokashi compost in a garden supplies
plants with a nourishing food source and conditions the soil with the microbes
it has in it. Bokashi compost scraps can also be mixed into a
regular/traditional compost pile instead of transferring to soil.<span style="mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">

Bokashi composting online, but it will cost you $50-75 to score one. I went the
DIY route and made one out of two 2-gallon paint/storage buckets, available at
most home centers ($5-10). You can also make your own Bokashi EM bran

of the easiest ways to help the Earth is by conserving water, which can be done
in a variety of creative and unique ways, right from your very own bathroom.
The average person uses around 120 gallons of water per day with 10-20 percent
spent just on toilet flushes. A standard
toilet can use 3.5 to 7 gallons of water per flush – by not flushing
afterwards, you can save just that much water. A good rule of thumb to go by to
keep the situation from escalating into some disgusting swamp in your toilet
bowl is “if it’s yellow let it mellow, if it’s brown flush it down.” However, if
even yellow seems off-putting to you, you can add a toilet cleaner tablet that
turns your water blue (chemical-free, of course) to end up with a charming
shade of green. You can also perform a leak test in your toilet, placing a few
drops of food coloring in the tank and waiting a few minutes. If the dye seeps
into the toilet bowl, you have a leak and water is being wasted. To decrease
the amount of water used in a flush, you can displace some water in the tank by
placing inside a water bottle filled partly with rocks and the rest water. This
can save another ten gallons or so per day.

hydrate your plants. Shortening your shower will also help conserve water, and another
resourceful method is to do your business in the shower (liquid only, of

would be providing yourself with a lovely makeshift bidet, which happens to be
very popular in Europe.

ways to preserve our supply of freshwater is to go meatless a couple of days a
week or set up a rain barrel. And estimated 1800-2500 gallons of water (or
515-715 flushes) are used to produce just one pound of beef and by eliminating
meat from your diet one or two days a week you can save 3-6 weeks’ worth of
water. By collecting runoff water from your gutter or just leaving an open
barrel to collect rain, you can create a supply of water to use to water your
plants or wash your car with.

previous blog postings over the last few months is to increase awareness of
solar energy and its potential in Plano. The sample survey completed by the
group of students' families from PSHS was intended to obtain a better
understanding of the current views and concerns of residents. While this survey
represented only a sample of Plano residents, hopefully these initial results
will help facilitate the implementation of a wider survey of local residents.
The results from a wider survey could enable interested citizens groups to
create action plans to communicate opportunities about the great potential over
the coming years of expanding the deployment of solar energy right here in
Plano.

In North Texas, given our susceptibility to drought, the need for an alternative to landscape watering becomes more compelling.
The Texas AgrLlife Research and Extension Center offers a series of classes on water conservation demonstrating how easy it is for homeowners to set up their own drip irrigation and rain water harvesting system. During a two-hour class at the extension center, located at 17360 Coit Rd., Richardson, Texas, participants learn about the different types of available commercial tubing, the proper way to lay out an irrigation system to maximize water pressure and evenly distribute water in the covered area, along with different components needed for the system such as a backflow preventer, splitter, filter, pressure regulators, tubing adapters and tubing to set up one’s own system.
The class outlines the steps needed to convert an existing sprinkler system into a drip system. In addition, Texas AgriLife offers classes on rain water harvesting. Every inch of rain falling on the roof of a 2,000 square foot home collects over 1,200 gallons of water. Harvesting this water with rain barrels connected to rain gutters makes practical sense. Participants of the class learn how to make a rain barrel and properly install a rain barrel harvesting system at home. Classes in drip irrigation and rain water harvesting are held at the Texas AgriLife Extension Center through the summer and fall. Registration is online at http://dallas.tamu.edu/courses.
Although we enjoyed a relatively lush spring, North Texans realize how precious water is in our community. Water management practices through drip irrigation and rain water harvesting help reduce wasting our existing water supply from lakes and reservoirs in our watershed.

Preliminary data at the end of 2011 indicate this number increased to over 65 GWp. Germany continues to lead the world with about 40 percent of installed solar energy capacity (over 25 GWp).

At the end of 2010, the United States had installed about 2.2 GWp (2.2 billion Wp) of PV solar. Preliminary data for 2011 indicate that we now have over 4 GWp installed, a very sizable increase in just one year. Closer to home, Texas added about 47 MWp (47 million Wp) of PV solar installations in 2011 bringing the cumulative installed capacity to about 80 MWp.

Texas exceeded its overall Renewable Energy Portfolio Standard (RPS) requirement passed by the Texas Legislature by installing over 10 GW (10 billion W) of wind energy. (The original RPS passed in 1999, with an update in 2005.) However, the 2005 legislation included a target for the state to reach 5 million W of non-wind renewable energy. As solar energy continues to expand all around the world and the US, we have further opportunities in Texas to grow our use of solar energy. (See the Live Green in Plano blog posting from March 21, 2012 - Solar Energy in Texas.)

So how does this growth in solar energy around the world and the US impact residents in Plano? What’s in it for us? How much electricity is produced today in Plano from PV solar? To achieve the target of 500 MW across Texas, how much electricity should Plano be producing from PV solar to contribute our share?

At the end of 2010, it is estimated Plano had about 240,000 Wp of PV solar installed in 35 to 40 residences and businesses around the city . If we use the Texas RPS goal of 500 MW non-wind, and assume we should target this non-wind as solar, we can make some calculations to determine a few targets for Plano.

If we use population as our metric, Plano has approximately 1.06 percent of the state's population. So one percent of the 500 MW target means Plano’s target is 5.3 MWp from PV solar to contribute our share of the overall Texas RPS target. If we assume the average PV solar installation is 5,000 Wp (which is a typical size residential PV solar system across the US), then we would need approximately 1,060 of these average PV solar installations in Plano to achieve 5.3 MWp. Real estate data on the internet indicates Plano has approximately 60,000 single family homes. To achieve the target of 5.3 MWp of electricity generated from PV solar, we only need about 1.8 percent of our existing homes (1,060/60,000) to have this 5,000 Wp PV solar system installed and operational.

Where is more information about PV solar installations for your home? Generally, electricity is distributed to residents in Plano by either Oncor or CoServ. If your home is serviced by Oncor, then you can find out about solar program information from their website - takealoadofftexas.com.

Check out a few examples of solar programs offered by retail electric providers operating in Plano in the Oncor serving area by visiting their websites:

greenmountain.com

reliant.com

txu.com

If your location is serviced by CoServ, check out information about PV solar at their website - coserv.com

Need more info about promoting the use of solar power generation in Plano? We have also done a terrific job as a community in conserving our resources during the period that water restrictions have gone into effect, resulting in a decrease from 107 million gallons per day of usage in the city down to just over 46 million gallons per day since the middle of August, 2011. As a result of the recent rainfall and our conservation efforts, the City of Plano changed the Stage 3 Watering Restrictions.

Effective April 1, Plano residents are allowed to water landscapes once a week. The watering schedule is an even/odd system based upon the last digit of the service address. Under the new watering schedule, odd addresses can operate irrigation watering (such as sprinklers) on Tuesdays and even addresses can do so on Thursdays. No watering with sprinklers is allowed between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Foundations, new landscaping, first year plantings of shrubs and trees may be watered within a 10-feet radius of their trunk for up to two hours any day by a hand-held hose, a soaker hose or a dedicated zone using a low-flow irrigation system.

However, let's not lose sight of the fact that we must still do all we can to protect one of our most precious resources in North Texas. Inspect your sprinkler system to ensure that the sprinkler heads are functioning properly and are aligned where they should be. During the weeks we have rain, please turn off sprinkler systems. Repair any leaking faucets and any other signs of water leaks around the home. Reduce the amount of water consumed by using more efficient flow control methods in shower stalls and toilets. Maximize the loads of dishware and laundry in your dishwashers and washing machines, respectively.

Let's learn from the experiences over the last several months and continue to treat water as the priceless substance it truly is.

Sincerely,

The Sustainability StewardUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-433540846248458901.post-16566774849015511842012-03-21T17:29:00.003-07:002012-03-21T17:46:29.736-07:00Spread the WordThis past week, I was off from school on our spring break and I got to spend it in Hawaii. Now obviously, going to Hawaii was an amazing experience by itself, but I also learned a lot from the people of the island. My family and I went to the island of Maui, which is a windy place year round. I know of many places that are windy because of their proximity to the ocean, but never have I seen so many wind turbines placed on every area that had a high elevation. Not only that, but because of the high amount of sun that Maui receives, they have solar energy panels everywhere. I saw them on the streetlights, the houses, the stores - almost every time I turned my head, my eyes would be greeted by yet another solar panel (well I may be exaggerating just a little bit).

Upon arriving at the island, my sister and I cruised through the radio stations. Instead of hearing the normal pop music with the occasional commercial mixed in, we heard older songs and different commercials. This fact in itself may not be astounding, but what really struck me was that during every commercial break, the radio show hosts mentioned an eco-friendly tip that they encouraged their listeners to follow as well. When I heard this, I really got thinking: If the people in Hawaii can do it, then so can we!

So my challenge for all of you this week is this - share two tips with friends and family this week, and see if you can get them to follow it too! We may not be able to get our radio show hosts to do this yet, but we can share tips with the people we know and keep the challenge going! Your challenge can be face-to-face or even on social networking sites. What better way to go green than with a “green grass” roots campaign?

Until next time,
greengirl (:Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-433540846248458901.post-41530363906123102332012-03-21T17:11:00.005-07:002012-03-21T17:28:27.062-07:00Solar Energy in TexasDid you know the amount of solar energy reaching the Earth in one hour is approximately the same as the total energy used by everyone on the planet for an entire year? Imagine the abundant amount of sunshine in Texas alone!

Texas continues to grow, and so is the demand for energy. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) recently released (Dec. 2011) their 10-year energy outlook which indicated the need for additional energy generation - in particular, the need for additional energy to handle peak demands in the summer.

See http://ercot.com/news/press_releases/show/459.

Wouldn't it be great to meet some of our growing energy needs by tapping the HUGE potential of energy from the sun? Generating electricity from solar panels (photovoltaic or PV panels) installed on homes and businesses have the following key benefits:

1. Electricity generation is generally aligned with the time of day demand. So, while our air conditioners are in heavy, almost continuous use during Texas summers, this is also when the sun shines brightest and solar panels generate the most electricity!

2. Solar energy installed costs are already lower than other existing peak demand generation sources.

3. Electricity generated by distributed solar panels on homes and businesses is located where the demand is consumed (our house/business), thus eliminating electricity transmission losses.

4. Electricity generated from solar panels does not require our scarce Texas water resources for electricity generation like other conventional electricity generation sources.

5. Distributed electricity generation from solar panels is generally a quick deployment - six months versus up to three years for conventional power plants.

For overview information about solar energy, please watch these short introductory videos (about 4 minutes each) at these URLs:

https://www.eeremultimedia.energy.gov/solar/videos/solar_power_basics

https://www.eeremultimedia.energy.gov/solar/videos/photovoltaics_diverse_technology

If you would like further information about what you could do to help promote the use of distributed solar power generation in Texas, please send your request to the email address given below:

ptsea047@gmail.com

Plano Solar Energy AdvocateUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-433540846248458901.post-49378961539635644822012-03-14T10:09:00.002-07:002012-03-14T10:55:31.843-07:00Natural BeautyHello fellow EcoNinjas!

I think that every teenage girl wants to experiment with new trends in makeup, but what they don't realize is that many cosmetics contain ingredients that are harmful to their skin, AND THE ENVIRONMENT!!! I put together a list of foods that could double as make up products because of the amazing effects that they have on your skin... The best part? All of these foods can be found right here, in our wonderful city of Plano!

1- Yogurt- Yogurt is rich in supply of Vitamin A and Vitamin D, making it the ideal food to help you sharpen your eyesight (buh-bye contacts!) and have your daily dose of Calcium. (yogurt can also double as a GREAT facial mask!)

2- Strawberries- Spring is right around a corner, and so is strawberry season! These juicy red fruits are chocked full with many nutrients (phenols, anthocyanins, and ellagitannins) that have been proven to protect cell structures in the body and prevent oxygen damage to the skin. Strawberries are also a healthier option for those of us who like to whiten our teeth- they act like a buffer to take away stains of coffee, tea, and sodas!

3- Salmon- This delicious fish contains many fatty acids that work to keep skin feeling and looking fresh, hydrated, and healthy. Check out grocery stores in Plano to choose from an extensive variety of salmon!

4- Almonds- Vitamin E, magnesium, monounsaturated fat, and protein all in one bite... could we ask for anything more convenient?

EcoNinjaUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-433540846248458901.post-54525146622431204752012-03-12T11:00:00.004-07:002012-03-12T11:05:47.592-07:00A Trip To The MRFOn Wednesday, February 29, I was able to tour the Plano Material Recovery Facility (MRF) located at 4200 East 14th Street in Plano. The MRF is run by Republic Services/Allied Waste, and has a contract with a number of cities throughout Collin County to collect, sort, bundle, and redistribute recycled waste products ranging from paper (including corrugated) and plastics to metals and glass to a variety of industrial customers. The MRF processes over 130 tons of recycled material daily, but has the capacity when running at all three shifts to sort and bundle over 300 tons.

It's a remarkable facility in it's entire operation. Republic Services and Allied Waste recycling trucks drop off products daily at the facility, where huge front loaders scoop up the material and drop it into a hopper which takes it up through the first of many conveyer systems on the first start of the sorting process. The first sorting step involves corrugated paperboard and cardboard, typically the heaviest among the recycled materials. The remaining material then continues to go through the conveyor line as lighter and material with less mass continues to be sorted out. All of the material is eventually bailed and deposited on trucks which weigh the recycled products for the eventual industrial consumer.

One challege that the MRF continues to have to contend with are thin-film plastic shopping bags, the type one finds at discount and grocery stores. Those products, along with Styrofoam, are true waste for the landfill and should never be added to the recycling bin. Not only does this contaminate a recycled load that ultimately ends up being re-diverted to the landfill since the equipment isn't designed to sort out the thinnest film plastics that make up the bags, but the bags themselves get caught in the conveyor systems forcing them to be shut down 2 - 3 times daily in order to have the bags cleared from the rollers. A line shut down costs Republic Services $35/minute; in addition to that, there is limited space to store the unsorted recycled material and the bales of product that are shipped out, so shutting down the sorting line has an almost immediate impact on the amount of material that starts to pile up in queue.

Industrial buyers of the recycled material are global; much of the product is immediately shipped off for eventual use in China. Once the largest product recycled by volume, newsprint has been greatly reduced with glass at nearly the same volume of material being recycled as paper products, followed by plastics and metals.

Hats off to Kim Soto of the City of Plano for arranging the tour and to Tommy Kirk, the MRF manager, for taking us through the facility and explaining the process steps. Every ton that gets sent through there is one less ton that ends up in our muncipal landfills.

The Sustainability StewardUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-433540846248458901.post-80237299770315579872012-02-28T10:04:00.003-08:002012-02-28T12:10:10.258-08:00Renewable EnergyInterested in learning about, using, and promoting renewable energy?

Interested in learning about solar energy?

Interested in learning about the vast wind energy in Texas that is already being utilized?

A really good way is to get involved locally.

A really good way to get involved locally is to attend a NTREG meeting?

Which leads to the question --- What is NTREG?

NTREG is the North Texas Renewable Energy Group. It was established in 2001 with the primary goal of educating North Texans about the power of renewable energy ("RE"). As the NTREG webpage states - "NTREG members come quite literally from all walks of life. You need not be an engineer or the proverbial rocket scientist to be an active and productive participant with us." NTREG is a 501(c)(3) non-profit volunteer organization, and is the local chapter of the Texas Solar Energy Society (TXSES), which is the state chapter of the American Solar Energy Society (ASES). NTREG monthly meetings are currently being held at the REI store in Dallas on LBJ Freeway. Information about upcoming meetings is available at their website - http://www.txses.org/NTREG/events.htm

At the most recent meeting on Saturday, February 11, the presentation "Denton Municipal Electric's Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Initiatives" was lead by Lisa A. Lemons. Lisa is the Energy Efficiency & Sustainability Manager for Denton Municipal Electric. This was a very informative presentation and interactive discussion about Denton's initiative to become the "Greenest City in Texas" which began in earnest in 2007. Denton's municipal electric utility now obtains 40% of its electricity from renewable sources, which is one of the highest, if not the highest percentage in Texas. Most of this renewable energy in Denton is coming from the Wolf Ridge Wind Farm, which sits in rural Cooke County, north of Muenster, Texas, only about 30 miles from Denton.

Denton has also recently issued a request for proposal (RFP) for a purchase power agreement for 10-20MW of solar generation. The responses for the RFP are due February 21, 2012 (VERY SOON). If the responses are within the financial objectives of the project, the objective is to have the system online by June 2013. Denton's RFP was modeled after the recent RFPs that San Antonio, Texas has issued for larger solar generation systems (up to 400MW).

As we know, the sun shines a lot in Texas! And, we also know that we generally have the biggest demand for electricity when the sun shines a lot in the summer. So spend some time to learn about solar energy and other renewable energy - come to the next NTREG meeting!

Larry Howe
Plano Solar Energy AdvocateUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-433540846248458901.post-47656744409959075982012-02-27T12:36:00.004-08:002012-02-27T12:42:24.783-08:00Dallas Regional Science and Engineering FairThis past weekend, I had the honor of being a judge at the annual Dallas Regional Science and Engineering Fair held at Fair Park. There, over 1000 middle and high school students from across the metropliex congregated to show their projects, with the winners in the competition advancing to the state competition that will be held in San Antonio, with the top seniors advancing to the international science fair.

I asked to be a judge in the environmental management division among the middle school students, and was extremely impressed with all of the submissions I judged.

The first place went to Katrina Druffner at All Saints Catholic School, who demonstrated a filtration method for removing copper and other heavy metals out of water using banana peels and lemon rinds. In many developing countries, particularly around areas with metal mines, potable water is difficult to find that isn't contaminated with heavy metal content. Her project demonstrated the effect of the negative ion charges from fruit that could be found in those regions as a way to help filter out those contaminants. In addition, Katrina won the junior division in the United States Naval Science Award.

Among the other projects that I assessed that would be of interest to those who follow Live 2 Live Green here in Plano:

- What type of human hair is most efficient in cleaning up automobile oil spills? (Wavy brunette hair is three times as effective as straight black hair and superior to blond hair). This project garnered an honorable mention and was won by Yingyan Ho and Jerry Liu, two students from Rice Middle School here in our own Plano, Texas.

- Are water turbine blades that are straight generate more power than turbine blades with individual cups? (Blades with cups generate twice the power than straight turbine blades). This project was also an honorable mention awardee from Reagan Cantrell at Schimelpfenning Middle School.

- Which types of worms were more efficient in creating the most compost? (It turns out that red worms were superior to earthworms, creating twice as much compost per weight).

- Which types of commercial mulch retained the most water among 30 different brands (Scott'sbrand Deep Forest Brown), although Texas Pure was also ranked high for it's water retention properties as well!

In all, I was very impressed to see the ingenuity among the student submissions I judged and was glad to see the interest among our youth in trying to find ways to help protect our environment.

Good luck to those who advance to the state competition, and for those who want to see more details on the science fair, please go to the following link:

http://www.drsef.org/

The Sustainability StewardUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0
